Sourloulou street band

Sourloulou is a large music ensemble from Athens. Their repertoire comprises of traditional and folk songs from Greece and the Balkans. Apart from local fiestas and concerts, they frequently roam the streets of Athens, spreading their joyful vibes.

The word Sourloulou, traditionally used as an insult, roughly translates as free, independent, sexually liberated woman. The band -and myself- of course reclaim the word as a positive description and as a very fitting characterization of the band’s purpose and style.

The lettering is reminiscent of old greek film titles and the illustration is inspired by the illustrative style of advertisements in the same period (50s-60s). Atfer all, most of the songs intepreted by Sourloulou come from the same era. The girl’s surroundings resemble Athenian landmarks, as the Parthenon and Monastiraki station.
